250 Years Of Independence… Almost!
By James Lowe
As we look forward to the celebration of our nation’s Independence Day, July 4, 2025, we are only one year short of the United States of America’s 250th Birthday, which will be July 4, 2026! We are truly a blessed nation to have enjoyed such a wonderful, democratic nation for so long.
I remember, as a 14-year-old boy, when our country celebrated its Bicentennial in 1976. My mother’s friend was taken aback by my apathy for the celebrations at the Vidalia football field to mark the 200th birthday of our country. I was naive and unappreciative of the significance of the milestone. Now that I am 63 years old, I have been anticipating the nation’s 250th birthday for some time and have wondered about the reasons for the lack of build-up to the event. Well, I suspect the anticipation will begin to grow soon after this year’s Independence Day.
As we commemorate the history of the Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4, 1776, let us not forget that the American Revolutionary War for that independence was fought from 1775-1783. Blood was shed to become an independent nation.
Time and time again, our nation’s independence would be challenged. Over the next 200-plus years, our country has been involved in many wars. Yes, today, we are blessed to have American troops stationed all over the world so that we can remain free.
Our country continues to have political differences. Then, there are situations where people struggle to make a living. There remains crime. In many cases, crime goes without consequences. Protests occur. Yes, the United States continues to face challenges.
Thank God that He does bless the USA! Our people live in freedom! We are permitted to protest. Citizens are active in their political lives as they learn, debate, and vote their conscience freely.
On this Independence Day, allow me to challenge you to examine our Christian lives. God provided forgiveness and freedom through Jesus! Just as our nation’s freedom has been backed by bloodshed to make and keep it free, Jesus paid a high price on the cross of Calvary to free us from the wrath of our sins. We are called to use that freedom for good.
The Bible tells us in Galatians 5:13, “For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another.”
As we celebrate this Independence Day with food, fellowship, and fireworks, let us also say a prayer of thanks for the reasons for our nation’s freedom and our spiritual freedom. And let us serve our fellow Americans.
