The Heart of a Mother:
Glenda Anderson And The Mission Of The PAYH
By Dr. Jeff Padgett
Chief Communications Officer, Paul Anderson Youth Home
Mother’s Day is a time set aside to honor the women who have shaped our lives with love, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment. For many, it’s a day filled with gratitude, celebration, and reflection on the countless ways a mother’s influence has guided us. But here at the Paul Anderson Youth Home, Mother’s Day also carries a deeper meaning—one that is closely tied to the heart of our mission.
The young men who come to PAYH often arrive from difficult and broken circumstances. Many have experienced instability, loss, or strained relationships within their families. For some, the consistent presence of a loving, guiding mother figure has been absent. That reality is not something we overlook—it is something we actively seek to address.
At its core, our mission is about restoration. It’s about helping these young men rediscover their value, rebuild their character, and find hope for their future. And in many ways, the influence we strive to provide reflects the very qualities we celebrate on Mother’s Day: compassion, patience, guidance, and unconditional care.
This mission is beautifully exemplified in the life of Glenda Anderson. While Paul Anderson is widely known for his strength and legacy, it was Glenda who quietly and faithfully helped shape the heart of this ministry. She didn’t just support the mission—she lives it out daily.
Glenda has a unique ability to make each young man feel seen, valued, and cared for. She offers encouragement when it is needed most, extends grace in moments of failure, and models a steady, nurturing presence that many of the boys have never experienced before. In countless ways, she “mothers” these young men—not only through words, but also through actions that reflect genuine love and compassion.
Her influence helps create an environment where healing begins. She demonstrates that strength is found not only in discipline and structure but also in kindness, patience, and understanding. The culture of care that exists at PAYH today is, in many ways, a reflection of the foundation she helped build.
While the PAYH is not a replacement for a mother, it is a place where young men can experience nurturing relationships that point them back to what a healthy, loving family can look like. Through structure, mentorship, and faith-centered teaching, we aim to instill the same sense of accountability and encouragement that so many mothers faithfully provide every day.
We also recognize that many of these young men do have mothers who love them deeply, even if circumstances have created distance or hardship. Mother’s Day becomes an opportunity to restore those connections—to encourage forgiveness, communication, and healing. It’s often in these moments that we see powerful transformation, not just in the lives of the young men but within their families as well.
For our staff and supporters, this day is a reminder of the vital role that love and consistency play in shaping a life. It challenges us to continue showing up, to continue pouring in, and to continue believing in the potential of every young man who walks through our doors.
This Mother’s Day, we honor not only the mothers who have given so much but also women like Glenda Anderson, whose quiet strength and nurturing spirit continue to impact lives. It is a spirit that lives within PAYH’s mission—one rooted in love, restoration, and the belief that every young man deserves a chance to experience both.
And for that, we are deeply grateful.

Strength For The Day
Each week, PAYH shares a devotional; “Strength For The Day,” by Chaplain (Col) Stephen W. Leonard, USA, Ret. In addition to being a retired US Army Chaplain, he is also the husband of our Co-Founder, Glenda Anderson Leonard. His writing is both moving and inspiring and will most certainly lift your spirit and encourage you in your walk with Jesus. To receive his weekly writing, you can subscribe online at payh.org. The Miles Are Now In The Making
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Vanden Dixon from VTH Factory in Statesboro, GA, for coming out and investing in our guys by servicing and fitting them for their bikes!
Vanden went above and beyond—helping each rider get properly fitted and teaching proper gear use, chain maintenance, and what to look for to keep their bikes running smoothly. He also showed them how to make key adjustments to prevent strain, aches, and numbness while riding.
We would also like to thank PAYH Board Member and cycle enthusiast Danielle Hutcheson for joining Vanden and helping train the boys in bicycle safety. Together, they covered essential riding habits—watching for hazards, riding smoothly, avoiding sudden braking, maintaining proper spacing, and staying alert on the road.
This kind of hands-on knowledge is invaluable as these guys prepare for a demanding ride. Not only did Vanden equip them with practical skills, but he also instilled confidence in them to handle their bikes properly.
Thank you both for pouring into these young men and helping set them up for success!
