Memorial Day
By James Lowe
Memorial Day is always commemorated in the U.S. on the last Monday in May. In 2024, Memorial Day is on Monday, May 27th. The holiday of remembering our fallen soldiers goes all the way back to the Civil War. The idea for a specific holiday began in 1868. It was named national “Decoration Day” to be observed on May 30th by decorating the tombs of Union soldiers. Following World War 1, its scope included all who died in any war or military action. Later, the name “Memorial Day” became common after World War 2, and in 1967, it was declared the official name by Federal Law.
On Memorial Day, it is traditional to fly the U.S. flag at half-staff from dawn until noon. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to those who have died in military service.
As we reflect upon our recent Easter celebration and Holy Week observations, many people have sought a deeper relationship with God. It is done not only through remembrance, but also through reflection and prayer. The Christian Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter. As Christians, we remember our fallen hero, Jesus.
Isaiah 5-6 (NLT): 5 But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. 6 All of us, like sheep, have stayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all.
Matthew 27:32–50 records the crucifixion of Jesus. We remember these events on Good Friday. It is a solemn day. But unlike the U.S. Memorial Day, we save our flowers for Easter morning. Many churches provide an empty cross where people can attach beautiful flowers to mark the risen Savior. The Christian Memorial Week includes Easter. It calls us to remember all that Jesus did for us. It is an excellent time to rededicate our lives to our Savior and Lord!
To conclude, it is very important for us to remember all the U.S. soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. Their heroics allow us to enjoy freedom.
Let us also remember that Jesus’ death and resurrection allow us to enjoy spiritual freedom through salvation in Him.
Happy Memorial Day 2024!
