Overcoming the Fear of Failure
By Jeff Padgett, Ph.D.
Chief Communications Officer, Paul Anderson Youth Home
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7
Fear of failure is natural when starting something new, but Scripture reminds us that fear should never control our lives. At The Paul Anderson Youth Home, we see young men who have faced repeated setbacks learn a crucial truth: failure is not final, and it is not fatal. Your past mistakes do not have to define your future.
Faith Requires Us to Move Forward
In Matthew 25, the servant who buried his talent let fear paralyze him. Growth and change require courage, and sometimes stepping into God’s purpose means risking failure. At The PAYH, we encourage young men to take another step and believe God has more for their lives than what their past suggests.
Failure Can Become a Teacher
Failure doesn’t have to be wasted—it can educate us (Psalm 119:71). When we make mistakes, taking responsibility allows us to learn, adjust, and try again. Accountability isn’t punishment; it’s growth. A setback can become an opportunity to discover new strengths and redirect our path.
Everyone Falls—The Difference Is Who Gets Back Up
Proverbs 24:16 reminds us, “For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again.” Stumbling is inevitable, but we don’t have to stay down or let shame define us. True transformation happens when we take responsibility, develop new disciplines, and trust God to help us keep moving forward.
Replace Fear With Faith
Overcoming fear isn’t about trying harder—it’s about trusting Jesus Christ (Philippians 4:13, Psalm 56:3). Faith doesn’t guarantee we won’t fall; it means our failures don’t get the final say. Through Christ, fear turns into faith, mistakes become lessons, and an uncertain past gives way to a life of purpose. Don’t let fear hold you back—get back up, trust Him, and keep moving forward.
Where Families Grow Together
Family Weekend was filled with laughter, connection, and unforgettable moments as our young men enjoyed meaningful time with the people they love most.
These special weekends remind us that transformation happens not only in our boys’ lives but also throughout their families. Click on the picture to view the video.

30 Years. Countless Lives. One Lasting Legacy.
After 30 years of faithful service, our Director of Mentors, Kevin Williams, is retiring from The Paul Anderson Youth Home.
For three decades, Kevin has given much more than his time—he has given his heart. He has walked alongside countless young men, offering encouragement when they needed it, correction when necessary and hope when they struggled to see a future for themselves.
Kevin has been a steady presence at the PAYH and a friend, mentor, and example to generations of young men. His influence will live on in the lives of those he has encouraged and the families he has helped strengthen.
Kevin, thank you for 30 years of loving young men, believing in second chances, and faithfully serving the PAYH mission. You have made a difference that numbers can never measure, and you will always be a part of the PAYH family.
Congratulations on your retirement, Kevin! We love you, appreciate you, and pray that God richly blesses you in this next chapter.
